Pay It Forward
I know it’s the year of our Lord 2015 but I still get amazed sometimes at the power of the World-Wide Web. Last Friday I received a call from this precious mother who was looking for any Chiropractor who would mind treating her son on a Saturday. Turns out her son (Trand) has been hiking the Appalachian Trail (solo) all summer and made it from the starting point in Maine, all the way down to Virginia.
While coming down a trail, apparently the backpack went one way and his low back went another way…Bam!! Pinched Nerve!! The mother relayed to me that her son was in dire pain and that she has contacted several other Chiropractors in Virginia and here in East Tennessee (Including her OWN…name withheld to protect the guilty) with no success of finding adequate or accommodating treatment.
I myself was in fact heading to West Virginia the next day (Saturday) with my son to go whitewater rafting down the Upper Gauley River, however when I realized the situation her son was in, I knew my plans needed to be slightly altered.
She stated that she was in route to Virginia to pick her son up and that she could have him back to Tennessee and at good ol’ Trinity Chiropractic first thing in the morning if I could make it happen.
Long story short, we saw him Saturday morning and again Monday morning. His right hip and L5 vertebrae were properly re-aligned and I prayed for him and waived goodbye as he headed back to Virginia to finish the last 700 miles of the AT.
I said all of that to say this. Sometimes we have to alter our plans in order to help people. Dr. Sid Williams, a founder of Life Chiropractic University in Marietta GA, often put it this way. “Give for the sake of Giving. Serve for the sake of serving. And Love for the sake of Loving”. It is a motto that I have often leaned on over the years. But perhaps going even deeper was the Apostle John who stated in 1 John 3:17
But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
I didn’t have any “goods” for Trand but I did have an ability and a service to offer him. Not saying any of this to toot my own horn, but a gentle reminder that God blesses all of His children in different ways. It was an honor to be of service to someone in need and I challenge you the reader of this blog, to pay it forward so to speak and be a blessing when opportunity comes knocking on your door…..
